As teenage girls, we are surrounded by a culture in which beauty and physical appearance is literally everything. Our media and society pushes for the idea that if you’re not physically beautiful, nothing else really matters.
I am here to tell you that this is not the case!
1 Peter 3 gives us a different definition of beauty. Verse 4 tells us that our adorning (our decoration and appearance) comes from the hidden person, the heart and soul that is inside of you. This heart and soul, God tells us, is very precious in His sight.
So, where does modesty come into play? If our physical appearance isn’t what’s precious in God’s sight, why does it matter what we wear and how we act in our bodies? 1 Corinthians 6:19 says, “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God?”
We need to dress modestly because our body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, and it’s from God!
That should be motivation enough to dress in a way that would be pleasing to the Lord.
Our life purpose as Christians should be to glorify God in all we think, say, do, and feel. Verse 20 of 1 Corinthians 6 tells us to glorify God in our bodies. If we are living our lives to please and glorify the Lord, our bodies and outward appearance should be no exception.
Finally, if you are struggling with the issue of modesty, be reminded of 1 Corinthians 6:20.
