To the suffering sister: we are called to “crazy.”
We are called to be different.
We are called to live in a way that makes people ask, “Why?”
Today, if you are enduring hardship for the sake of Jesus, I’m right there with ya. As Christians – a special people that is set apart and sanctified through the love of Jesus – we are weird in the world’s eyes. Crazy. Ridiculous. We are willing to give up things that the world views as important because of our faith in Christ. We are marked as people that have no life and never have any fun.
But let me tell you something: this is what you’re called to. You’ve chosen to follow Jesus, which means you have to be different. The people in the world just don’t get it. But Jesus does, and you will receive your reward.
If you are currently suffering ridicule, embarrassment and isolation because of Jesus, you’re doing a beautiful thing. Jesus himself says that you are blessed when others “revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you… on my account.” (Matthew 5:11) But He doesn’t stop there. He tells us to “rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven…”
When your friends think you’re nuts for choosing church over something more “fun,” you’re blessed. When your teachers tell you to give up your convictions and follow the crowd but you follow Jesus instead, you’re so blessed. When you hold onto that hope given you by the Father, and you live unashamed for Jesus, you are going to receive a reward.
Sometimes the right thing can feel so wrong – when you are standing in a room full of people but you’re all alone, or you upset others because of your choice to stand with Jesus.
It’s hard. It hurts. But sister, it is so, so worth it. So don’t stop. Be bold and live to show Jesus.
